Lynden’s first post office was established on March 17, 1873, with Holden Judson appointed postmaster on a salary of $12 a year.

Judson maintained his post office in a desk in the front room of his home until the early 1880s.

Phoebe Judson was asked to select the name for the post office. She favored a name that she had heard from a poem, Hohenlinden, written by Thomas Campbell, which begins “On Linden, when the sun was low … .” Phoebe Judson changed the “i” in Linden to “y” because she felt it looked prettier.

Lynden also held its first election in the fall of 1873, and Holden Judson was elected county commissioner.
